These three met in the mountains of North Carolina and in their journeys of building small businesses have become close friends. HB CLAY centers on the handmade processes of ceramic objects to restore moments for self-connection through intentional design. With inspiration from both the blue ridge mountains of North Carolina and the red sandstone cliffs of Zion Utah, her pots explore different colors and textures from the natural environments of her homes. HB Clay produces small-batch forms to preserve the inherent nature of this craft. As a one-lady operation, she creates simple and functional wares that are part of one’s every day life.

We're on a mission to build connections and create beautiful jewelry, accessories, and other pieces that tell your stories.We cast found objects from nature like turtle shells and birch bark found along the Appalachian as well as create pieces inspired by honeycombs and rosemary. We cast into brass, silver, and gold, using diamonds to further celebrate the natural world with a blend of timeless and experimental styles. We first create each jewelry piece by hand, adding a unique touch you won't find anywhere else.

About HB CLAY / Hannah Barry:

HB Clay centers on the handmade processes of ceramic objects to restore moments for self-connection through intentional design. Since childhood, ceramics have been infused in the warmth of my home, the bond of family gatherings, and an expression of love and gratitude for communities across the world. When I found myself at the wheel on a Monday night for a throwing class at The Village Potters, I quickly fell into a deep curiosity and desire to understand clay. Throwing pots has sparked vulnerabilities, as well as a fierce dedication to connect memory with muscle. My passion for pottery has grown through exploring skills and techniques of current makers and pottery pioneers. Being immersed among professionals during my time at the Southern Highland Craft Guild, I studied different generations of form and design. From experimenting with textures, to trying grog-heavy clays, or testing a range of glazes and combinations, these wares are never exactly the same. All of my pots are functional with the purpose to be a part of one’s everyday routine. As a one-lady operation at HB Clay, I produce simple, small-batch wares to continue this cultural and creative enrichment.

About Carlisle Ceramics / Carlisle Harris:

I grew up in Georgia and have always had an interest in the arts, but I felt as if every medium I ever tried, I was unable to project the images I had in my head. After receiving a job opportunity in the fall of 2015, I made the move to Asheville, North Carolina. Not knowing anyone and always having an interest in clay, I signed up for a six week beginners class at The Village Potters with Sarah Wells Rolland. The moment I felt the clay move through my hands on the wheel, I knew I was hooked! I found myself sketching ideas, saving photos for inspiration, and planning how each piece was going to be glazed. The process consumed my thoughts. After my first class finished, I immediately signed up for another class with Judi Harwood, who not only pushed me but made me feel like she saw something in me. About a year after taking classes one night a week, I knew I wanted to immerse myself into this life. I learned that The Village Potters offered an independent study and mentoring (ISM) program which allowed emerging potters studio access seven days a week. I was thrilled at the thought of being able to be in the studio more. I decided to apply for the program and thankfully got accepted in November of 2017. Working with coils, slabs, hand building, throwing on the wheel, mixing my own glazes, loading and firing kilns, attending workshops - I spent the next two years soaking up every learning opportunity I could. I am now settling into my own home studio and excited to take my work to another level. My relationship with clay is more fulfilling than I ever thought and I finally feel as if I am able to create pieces I visualize in my mind. I am still growing, learning, and discovering, and I hope you all continue to enjoy a showcase of my passion.

About Ellen Catlin / Ellen Catlin:

Ellen Catlin is a contemporary American painter and sculptor working in Asheville, North Carolina. Originally from North Florida, Ellen was raised on a sailboat circumnavigating the world with her family. She went on to receive her BFA in painting from the University of Georgia and made her way up and down the east coast before settling in Western North Carolina. In her work she explores memory and experience, and how they manifest themselves in a person. an origin story is her keystone. In her own take on storytelling, she focuses on subconscious pairings, dusty recollections, and the translation of those feelings you can’t quite identify into a mark. Each brushstroke and color have a distinct and representational purpose which, in the end, culminates into a story told. She also paints plants.Her work can be found in private collections in new york city, los angeles, washington dc, atlanta, detroit, and more.

About Carlisle Ceramics / Carlisle Harris:

About Mary Frances Maker / Mary Frances Maker:

Mary Frances Flowers is a luxury jewelry brand with a curiosity for the unique and a passion for storytelling. After entrepreneurial mentorship and an introduction to jewelry-making at Wofford and then a comprehensive production course in NYC, I started making jewelry 5 years ago with a mission to build connections. By casting found objects such as birch bark and naturally-shed turtle shells and turning them into statement-making jewelry pieces, my goal is to offer an outlet and connection to our natural world, a chance to see its beauty in a new light. And by redesigning family diamonds and stones into modern and more wearable everyday designs through custom work, my hope is to strengthen my clients’ connections with their past and their family in a new way. It doesn't matter the dollar value of your grandmother's old pearls, it's the sentimental value that holds all the weight in my book. I’m originally from Columbus, GA, with my work heavily inspired by my business’s beginning years in Asheville, NC, and I currently reside in Raleigh, NC, with my husband, Hobbs, and bernedoodle, Porter.
